We all know that oxygen is essential for life. Every cell in your pet’s body needs it to survive and repair itself. Normally, your pet gets all the oxygen they need just by taking a breath. The lungs transfer oxygen to the red blood cells, which carry it around the body like little delivery trucks.

But what happens when those delivery trucks can’t get through?

If a pet has severe swelling, crushed tissue from an injury, or a nasty infection, the blood vessels can be damaged or blocked. The oxygen can’t reach the injury, and healing stops. This is where Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) changes the game.

At Ormeau Vet, we use this advanced technology to bypass the “traffic jams” in the blood vessels and force oxygen directly into the damaged tissue, speeding up recovery times significantly.

How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Work?

It sounds like science fiction, but it is actually simple physics. During a treatment session, your pet relaxes inside a specialized, clear chamber. We slowly pressurize this chamber and fill it with 100% pure oxygen (compared to the 21% oxygen in normal air).

Under this increased pressure, oxygen stops relying solely on red blood cells to get around. Instead, it dissolves directly into the blood plasma, lymph fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid. Think of it like the bubbles in a soda bottle—the pressure forces the gas into the liquid.

This means we can deliver massive amounts of oxygen to tissues that have little to no blood flow. This “super-oxygenation” reduces swelling, kills bacteria that hate oxygen (anaerobes), and gives the cells a massive energy boost to start rebuilding tissue.

When Do We Recommend HBOT?

Because HBOT is essentially a “healing accelerator,” we use it for a wide variety of conditions where tissues are struggling. It is widely used for wound healing, particularly for large, non-healing wounds, degloving injuries (where skin has been stripped away), or severe burns. The oxygen helps new blood vessels grow, allowing the skin to close much faster than with bandages alone.

It is also a powerful tool for Snake Bites. In Australia, snake venom causes massive tissue damage and swelling. HBOT helps reduce the swelling and necrosis (tissue death) around the bite site.

We also see incredible results with Neurological Issues and Post-Operative Recovery. For dogs recovering from spinal surgery (IVDD) or head trauma, the pressure helps reduce brain and spinal cord swelling, often helping paralyzed pets regain movement sooner.

What is the Experience Like?

Clients often worry that the chamber looks like a spaceship and might be scary. In reality, it is one of the most peaceful treatments we offer. The chamber has clear windoes, so your pet can see out, and we can see in.

Most pets find the experience very calming. The high levels of oxygen have a natural sedative effect, and because the chamber is pressurized, it feels like a warm, quiet cocoon. It is very common for us to look in and see a dog fast asleep, curled up with their favorite blanket, while the machine does all the work
